Giovanni Genio – Winemaker by Birth
“Genio,” in Italian, is not an easy surname to carry – it means “genius.” However, Giovani Genio bears this name lightly with his down-to-earth, intelligent, calm and cool demeanor. Born into winemaking in 1987, his family hillside home is steeped in vineyards. Giovanni’s father and uncle, who both run the small family winery, have been an inspiration from day one: “This is how I learned my first winemaking secrets…I always knew what I wanted to be when I grew up. I did very well over my six years at the Istituto Tecnico Agrario (a training college for wine technicians) located in Cividale del Friuli, graduating in viticulture and enology.” After graduation, Giovanni took his studies further and enrolled in the Enology Department at the famous University of Udine in 2006. This same year he also began apprentice work at Villa Russiz, shadowing the estate’s legendary enologist, Gianni Menotti. Since then, theory and practice have gone hand in hand. He learned from the best, both academically and at Villa Russiz.
“I believe the key to excellence is a combination of evolution and tradition. I have fully embraced the great heritage of Villa Russiz and hope to bring in fresh ideas and the enthusiasm of youth.”
