First Decade, 5 Puttonyos, Tokaj – 1996
In early 2017, Royal Tokaji’s winemaking team went into the library section of the cellars, to properly assess all the aszú wines from 1990-1999, the First Decade. Every single bottle was opened and tasted. Each perfect bottle was saved and rebottled at the winery under new corks, around 15% of the bottles were rejected. This unique release is a part of Royal Tokaji’s history and can never be repeated. Only 11 cases were imported to the United States.
1996 was a classic vintage with very good quality wines. Spring was late, but a quick rise in temperatures hastened the flowering. The number of sunny hours was lower than average but this disadvantage evaporated at the end of September with breezes drifting up the hillsides from The Great Plain of Hungary circulating moisture from early morning dews in the vineyards and spreading aszú spores. The wine from this vintage is harmonious and the acids are round. The aromas range from overripe apricot to light tobacco
Individually hand-picked aszú berries were soaked in fermenting must for three to four days. After maceration and pressing, a long and slow fermentation characterized the aszú wines, which ended towards the middle of the following summer. Long maturation took place in old wooden barrels in our historical underground cellars.
Reddish, with a dark orange hue that is very inviting. Dominated by honey and oranges, a delicious mixture which gives it a very feminine feeling. A fat middle and ending with a very long finish on a distinctly peachy note. This is a wine of compelling depth.
