"3 corkscrews"

“Hail the Cabs of 2002”

“From Napa’s Diamond Mountain District, this wine was the “bargain pour” of the tasting. Very friendly for a big wine, it offered a heady floral and berry nose and a vivid ruby color. A touch of black pepper, a whiff of anise and plenty of tobacco and leathery notes were hallmarks.”

Three Stars, Excellent

"If a sparkling wine can be 'big,' this one is...weight and a toasty character, which balance nicely with the exotic aromas of fruitcake, ginger and anise and flavors of pear and peach. The finish is creamy and long...."

“...equals the best of France in its price bracket. You will adore its outgoing aromas...and you will love its depth, its charm and it ability to be at home with a variety of small-plate flavors ranging from shellfish to pork. “

“An intense ruby, this wine’s smooth character, balanced full body and ‘gritty tannins’ had one panelist predicting it would become ‘a champ in the future.’ Dark fruit, smoked oak, black pepper, vanilla and chocolate aromas danced through the nose. Flavors of dark fruit, mint, cherry-vanilla soda, red licorice and sage skipped through the mouth. With its ‘sumptuous’ mouthfeel (despite a bit of sediment), this enjoyable wine will soften with age. The finish swayed through layers of ‘vibrant’ fruit before lingering on ‘shades of earth.'”

“Very much made in the aged, angular mold as its Reserve sibling above, this younger wine is equally high in developed character and shares its brethren’s creamy, fine-pitched mousse. It is a bit more angular in the late going, but fans of the austere, toasty style will find happiness here.”

“Only the second Cabernet release from this famous (as Schramsberg) bubbly house. This is a dense, dry, tannic mountain Cabernet, rich and long in blackberry fruit. It’s drinkable and probably at its best now due to soft acids.”

“The first Cabernet from the Schramsberg family, this is a valiant effort and a good beginning. Its black cherry fruit aromas have a strong sense of concentration, and that same ripe fruit claims centerstage in the wine’s medium-volume flavors. Supple to start, then tighter and firmer with a bit of heat showing up as it ends.”

This first growth Tokaji from the wonderful 1993 vintage is a favourite of Beverly Blanning MW. “The incredible rich, sweet palate combines smooth, cool, mushroomy flavours and zesty, orange marmalade fruit,” she says. “It is full, with deliciously refreshing acidity and endless length.”

“Less coffee here, with more caramel, tobacco and walnut notes. It tastes like higher alcohol too, lending weight and power, yet the sweetness and acidity are well-balanced. Fine, long, orange marmalade and mineral salt aftertaste.”
