“As civil war engulfed the eastern United States, in California a German immigrant named Jacob Schram quietly did his part to launch an industry for which the state would one day be famous. A century later, the Davies family acquired and restored the winery where Schram fermented and aged his Rieslings. Although the wine produced on that property today is Cabernet Sauvignon, the Davieses honor this trailblazer with their Schramsberg label, whose sparkling wines are some of the best to be found outside of Champagne. The Schramsberg 2006 J. Schram Brut gently coats the palate with its luxurious mousse-like texture, revealing essences of poached pear, candied lemon, pastry, and pistachio.”
