"Some years I like Schramsberg's Blanc de Noirs better, but historically they're best known for this wine. It's a good vintage, with a crisp attack of Meyer lemon that spreads on the midpalate, bringing some toast and a hint of earth on the finish."

"Schramsberg blends wines from more than 90 separately handled vineyard blocks to create this, its top Chardonnay-based wine. It's a blend of 77% Chardonnnay and 23% Pinot Noir, with 48% of the grapes coming from Napa. It's toasty and opulent, with notes of coconut, apple pie with the crust and molasses. Proprietor Hugh Davies says this can be cellared for 20 more years, although it's drinking very well right now."

"Its rich, nicely yeasted, not-too-fruity aromas have a certain finesse that begs comparison to the genuine article from France, but, once in the mouth, a bit of extra fruitiness plainly testifies to the wine's local provenance. Its underlying notes of fresh apples, mildly stated green peaches and fresh breads and chalk are well-supported by its persistent stream of small bubbles."

"While its Mirabelle running mate may have a slight tilt to Gaulle, this buoyant bottling is not anything but indelibly marked by its gregarious California fruit. It still has some room for a few yeasty highlights, but its compass is fixed on fresh cherries, and its creamy mousse and integral acids make it wonderfully drinkable."

Schramsberg - 2006 Blanc de Blancs, North Coast
"This attractive Blanc de Blancs manages at one and the same time to be loaded with character yet remains also on the energetic, well-fruited side. Its aromas are more creamy than "old yeasty" with notes of chalk and vanilla sitting in for the toasty notes that come with longer aged wines. Firm and abundant in its foamy, insistent mousse, this buoyant wine has the richness to go with foods like chicken in cream sauces and the acidity to make it a stellar mate to tangy shellfish dishes."

"A full dose of creamy yeast backed up by light, directly cherryish notes and by hints of burnt paper and baked brioche brands this wine as the real thing. It is explosively bubbled and is bristling with acidity and becomes a trifle hard and austere, yet it counters that minor bother with a minerally streak and a long finish."

The 2001 Reserve is one of the finest sparkling wines we have tasted from Schramsberg. A blend of 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay, and barrel fermented, it displays a rich golden color and a complex nose of hazelnut, toast, and melon-like fruit. Almost Burgundian in character it offers a moderately crisp attack with some dried fruit and oxidative notes of apple and pear. "This may be a good transitional wine to Champagne, as one panelist notes. It has more overt Chardonnay, some vanilla notes and a tough of lees on the nose with orange-raspberry marmalade, citrus zest and apple skin flavors. A touch herbal, oxidative and astringent at moments, it nonetheless is interesting and refreshing."

Its incredibly expressive aromas smell of aged yeasts, soy, tangy lemons, freshly baked crusty bread and a quiet hint of ginger ale and its impeccably balanced flavors follow suit from front to back. Brisk and austere, yet compelling in its layered richness, this brilliant effort is as good as it gets in sparkling wine. Schramsberg - Non-Vintage Mirabelle Brut, North Coast
"Schramsberg gets the most credit for its vintage wines, and we adored those. But the non-vintage Mirabelle cuvée was a pleasant surprise this year, a blend of vintages from 2004 to 2001. With 55 percent Chardonnay, there’s ripe pear and apple, but the Pinot Noir brings out squeezed orange and clean cranberry, with spun sugar overtones. It’s vibrant and just tangy enough to have an edge, thanks to those older reserve wines."

From its lightly citrusy smells to its crisp, mildly yeasty, clean-as-can be flavors, this energetic youngster hits all the right marks as Blanc de Blancs and finds an added measure of complexity by way of its carefully placed yeast. It is charged by lots of lasting, pinpointy bubbles and its finishing touches of minerals and chalk are precisely what one expects of the style.”

“85% Pinot Noir; 15% Chardonnay. This straw-colored offering is a crisper approach to Blanc de Noirs with a defined edge of acidity to its subtle themes of candied, faintly cherry-like fruit. It counts a generous dose of yeasty richness as a plus, and, although just a touch coarse in its mousse, it is fully charged with insistent bubbles. It ends with a lingering, wholly champenized finish of dried cherries, chalk and yeast, and it has the potential to get better with age.”

“60% Pinot Noir; 40% Chardonnay. Schramsberg’s remarkable string of successes continues with this vibrant, fruit-filled Rosé. While all Californian in its expression of fresh cherries, it is never candied or sweet and takes on a real measure of champenized richness by way of its plentiful yeast. Bright and alive, yet slightly creamy in texture, it hangs on and on with both fruit and lots of fine bubbles around at the end. If delightful to quaff on its own, it will make an exceptional mate to dishes such as simply grilled salmon or chicken in cream sauce.”
