2008 Sauvignon Blanc, Laguna Vista Vineyards, Sonoma Coast
Vineyard Source: Laguna Vista Vineyards, Sur Lees Selection
Clones: Clone 1 (62%) and Sauvignon Musque (38%)
Growing Sauvignon Blanc in the cooler regions of the Sonoma Coast AVA is both a challenge and a special opportunity. The 2008 vintage has concentrated fruit despite the difficult growing year. Spring frosts and cold rains were damaging to buds and clusters, resulting in lower than normal yields. The summer growing season was nearly perfect, with warm, sunny days and very few heat spikes. Fall brought warmer weather, advanced ripening and phenolic development. The maritime climate provided cooler nights and fog, which allowed for extended hangtime up until harvest. Lower yields provided fruit of exceptional quality. The grapes were hand picked October 12-18 in the cool, early morning hours.
Harvest Dates: October 12-18
The fruit was pressed cold in whole cluster and transferred to a temperature-controlled, stainless-steel tank. After settling, the juice was inoculated with Assmanhausen yeast. With the concentrated and intense flavors evident, the entire lot was moved to barrel to continue fermentation sur lie. Eighty-five percent was fermented in re-toasted French oak and 15 percent in new French. Hand stirring of the lees was done over six months, and has enhanced the complexity and mouthfeel, as you gain the richness of the yeast and the spice from barreling. After six months in barrel, the lots were blended and bottled in early May 2009.
Barrel Aging: 100% barrel fermented, French oak (15% new, 85% re-toasted), 6 months sur lie
Bottled: May 10, 2009
The two distinct clones fermenting in both new and re-toasted oak delivers a complex flavor profile. Clone 1 provides the traditional profile of citrus and lends high acidity. Sauvignon Musque provides depth of fruit and shows in the range of pear, fig and pineapple while adding a rich tropical profile. The complexity is balanced by the bright acidity. This 2008 Sauvignon Blanc will make an ideal aperitif wine and a great companion to a myriad of food pairings, including fresh or grilled fish and seafood, particularly oysters, crab, and lobster, along with grilled or broiled chicken dishes and a wide range of cheeses.
