Growing Sauvignon Blanc in the cooler regions of the Sonoma Coast AVA is both a challenge and a special opportunity. The vineyards where Sonoma Coast Vineyard's Sauvignon Blanc grapes are grown — adjacent to the Laguna de Santa Rosa — are typically impacted by cool maritime Pacific wind and fog and the 2007 vintage was no exception. The long growing season was marked by temperatures in the 70s and low 80s and in late September there were earlier than normal rains. While rain always poses a threat to grapes at that time of year, Sonoma Coast Vineyards benefited from our location because its cooler area results in lower sugar levels, which tends to protect grapes from rot. The grapes were left on the vine and were rewarded when October brought an end to the rain. Dry conditions and perfect temperatures prevailed and the fruit reached ideal flavor profiles. The grapes from both vineyards were hand picked during cool early morning hours. Harvest Dates: October 7-12 |

The fruit was pressed whole cluster and transferred to a temperature-controlled, stainless-steel tank. After settling, the juice was inoculated with Assmanhausen yeast. Fifty percent of the wine was fermented in barrels from Tonnellerie Sirugue, of which 35 percent were re-toasted and 15 percent were new, which led to the wine developing a rich and complex palate with a diverse range of spice components without adding an astringent wood character. Over the course of six months the lees were hand stirred, which dramatically enhanced the wine’s complexity and mouth feel while it gained richness from the yeast along with vanilla and toast flavors. The remaining 50 percent was aged in stainless-steel tanks. Bottled: May 10, 2008 |

The lots were blended and bottled in early May, with the finished wine delivering a complex flavor profile. The Clone 1 provides citrus flavors and bright acidity. The Sauvignon Musque provides deep fruit flavors that hint at pear, fig and apricot, as well as warm tropical fruit flavors. Our 2007 Sauvignon Blanc makes an ideal aperitif wine and is a great companion to a myriad of food pairings including fresh or grilled seafood, particularly oysters, crab, and lobster along with grilled or broiled chicken dishes and a wide range of cheeses. We have selected a screw cap closure to maintain the fresh and lively character of this wine. This wine will continue to evolve during its first year in bottle as the fruit profile marries with the distinctive characteristics of both the terroir and the winemaking techniques. Cheers!
