2006 Pinot Noir, Petersen Vineyard, Sonoma Coast
Vineyard Source: Petersen Vineyard
Clones: Dijon Clones 115, 667
The story of the 2006 vintage on the Extreme Sonoma Coast began with heavy winter rains that drove moisture and nutrients down to the deepest levels of the vine roots, followed by an unusually rainy and cool spring. The result of all the rain and cool temperatures was slow growth and development of the vines, including late bloom and unusually small cluster formation. The remainder of the growing season was marked by beneficial cool daytime temperatures and heavy nighttime fog, which led to full phenolic development with high acid levels and a very desirable 24.4 degrees Brix at harvest.

The entire vineyard was harvested on October 18. The grapes were picked by hand early in the cool, fog-shrouded morning to maintain the fruit’s delicate nuances.
Harvest Date: October 18
The clusters were hand sorted and destemmed into small one-ton fermenters. Only 10 percent of the fruit was kept in whole clusters to further accentuate the vintage’s influence on the fruit — a wonderful brightness. An extended eight-day cold soak was followed by a wild yeast-influenced fermentation. The cap was gently punched down twice a day. The juice was then chilled and inoculated with Assmanhausen yeast to complete fermentation. The must was pressed to barrel at three degrees Brix.

Barrel Fermentation and Aging
Tonnellerie Sirugue provided French oak barrels air dried for 36 months with medium-plus toast. The barrels have a tightly formed grain that provides an elegant and complex flavor profile with warm spice characteristics. Fifty percent of the barrels were new. The remainder were 1- and 2-year-old used French oak barrels. To capture and preserve the beautiful lushness and bright fruit character of this wine, we limited barrel aging to 10 months. It was lightly filtered before bottling.
Barrel Aging: French oak, 50% new
Bottled: September 7, 2007
The 2006 Petersen Vineyard Pinot Noir is wonderfully elegant and delicate, with perfectly balanced lushness and precise acidity. It expresses youthful vitality and a complex flavor profile of raspberry and blackberry flavors surrounded by warm baking spice. This wine will benefit from time in bottle as its delicate complexities continue to evolve. Cheers!
